Newman man arrested on multiple felony charges after firearm, machete found in park

NEWMAN — A man on supervised release was arrested Friday night after he allegedly attempted to discard a loaded firearm and a machete in Pioneer Park, according to the Newman Police Department.

At approximately 9:57 p.m. June 20, Officer Pasillas was patrolling the park when he made contact with 41-year-old Enrique Mendoza, who was known to be on Post Release Community Supervision. During the encounter, Mendoza was found to be in possession of a live round of ammunition, police said.

Surveillance footage later revealed that as Officer Pasillas approached, Mendoza removed a loaded, unserialized firearm and a machete from his pants and tried to discard them in different areas of the park.

Mendoza, who has multiple prior felony convictions, was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center. He faces several felony charges, including possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of a dirk or dagger.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
