GUSTINE — Authorities conducted a coordinated probation sweep in Gustine and neighboring areas Tuesday in response to an uptick in gang-related activity, resulting in three arrests on weapons and probation violation charges.
The Gustine Police Department and Merced County Probation Department teamed up for the June 17 operation, dubbed “Keep Gustine Safe,” executing approximately 12 probation searches throughout the day. The sweep began in the morning and wrapped up by 5 p.m.
Officers arrested three individuals for alleged possession of firearms, ammunition and other violations of probation conditions. All were booked into Merced County Jail.
The operation was put into motion in response to Gustine officers noticing an uptick in local gang activity, including graffiti and loitering around town.
“These type of proactive enforcement actions will continue as a reminder to those who continue to display disregard for the safety of community,” said Gustine Police Chief Ruben Chavez.
Chavez credited the operation’s success to the collaboration between agencies, thanking Deputy Probation Chief Daffron, Probation Supervisor Birrueta, Gustine Police Sgt. Francisco Martinez and Officer Zelvaggio for coordinating the sweep.
“As the Chief of Police for the Gustine Police Department, I am proud of the dedication and commitment of our Officers and the Merced Probation Officers,” Chavez said.
Authorities said additional probation enforcement actions are planned in the coming months.
