NEWMAN — Now in its fourth year, the “Panthers Beyond the Bell Lights on After School” program continues to grow, offering a safe, engaging, and educational environment for elementary students in the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

The program currently serves an estimated 150 to 200 students across a variety of academic sessions and enrichment clubs. Designed to support intellectual, social, and emotional development, Beyond the Bell has become a cornerstone of after-school programming in the district.

Led by Director Alyson Cassidy, who oversees all after-school, summer camp, and before-school programs, the initiative benefits from a strong leadership team. Cassidy has served as the district’s administrator for four years, providing consistent vision and oversight. Juana Cedano serves as the Beyond the Bell supervisor, offering hands-on support, while site coordinators Lesley Delgado and Jessica Galvan manage daily operations and student engagement at the Newman elementary site.

The program offers a wide range of activities, including academic support through After School Academies staffed by credentialed teachers, a Robotics Club that promotes STEM learning, and a Culinary Club focused on cooking skills and healthy eating. Other offerings include the Art Club, Bala Folclórico for traditional Hispanic dance instruction, and Panthers with a Purpose—a community service club that provides food and resources to families in need.

Beyond the Bell also supports youth employment by hiring high school students as tutors, giving them valuable work experience and mentorship opportunities.

This year, the program expanded to include the YOLO site, with plans to launch at the Bonita site next school year. Administrators say the goal is to reach more students annually and continue building a supportive, enriching environment for children throughout the district.
