Deadline approaches to register for Nov. 4 special election
vote

Voters in Merced and Stanislaus counties have until Monday, Oct. 20, to register and receive a vote-by-mail ballot for California’s upcoming Statewide Special Election on Nov. 4.

The election will feature a single statewide proposition—Proposition 50—and local officials are urging residents to make a plan to vote early, whether by mail, drop box, or in person.

In Stanislaus County, Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters Donna Linder reminds residents that online registration must be completed by Oct. 20 at www.stanvote.gov. Mailed registration forms must be postmarked by the same date to qualify for a vote-by-mail ballot.

Under California election law, eligible voters must be U.S. citizens, California residents, at least 18 years old on Election Day, and not currently in prison.

Those who miss the Oct. 20 deadline can still register and vote in person at the Stanislaus County Elections Office, located at 1021 “I” Street in Modesto, or at any Vote Center. A list of Vote Center locations is available at www.stanvote.gov.

Merced County voters can register online at www.registertovote.ca.gov or visit the Merced County Elections Office or one of five Vote Centers between Oct. 21 and Nov. 4 for conditional registration and same-day voting. More details are available at www.mercedelections.org.

Ballots and voter information guides began mailing out in Merced County on Oct. 6. The California Secretary of State mailed statewide voter guides starting Sept. 25.

Registered voters who need a replacement vote-by-mail ballot must submit their request by Tuesday, Oct. 28. Requests can be made by:

  • Mailing a signed letter to the Stanislaus County Elections Office, 1021 “I” Street, Modesto, CA 95354
  • Visiting the Elections Office or any Vote Center in person
  • Calling the Registrar of Voters at (209) 525-5201
  • Emailing stanvote@stancounty.com

In Merced County, voters may contact the Registrar of Voters at (209) 385-7541 for assistance.

Polls will be open statewide on Election Day, Nov. 4, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 4 to be counted.
