In a dominant display of early-inning offense and airtight pitching, the Ben Holt College Prep Academy Bobcats cruised to a 10-0 shutout victory over the Gustine Reds on Tuesday in Stockton.
The Bobcats wasted no time establishing control, turning the bottom of the first inning into a scoring clinic. Facing Gustine’s Danny Navarro on the mound, Ben Holt’s bats came alive immediately, plating five runs before the Reds could record three outs.
Gustine attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the second. #3 Frank Silvera ignited the dugout with a well-struck double, and #25 Luke Avila followed up with a single and a quick stolen base to put runners in scoring position. However, the Bobcats’ defense held firm. A fly out, infield pop-up, and a sharp comeback hit to the pitcher ended the threat, leaving the Reds stranded.
The middle innings belonged to the arms. In the bottom of the second, Gustine's defense found its rhythm, retiring the Bobcats in order, 3-up, 3-down.
The momentum was short-lived for the Reds, as Ben Holt’s pitching staff dismantled the Gustine lineup in the top of the third.
The bottom of the third proved to be the decisive blow. Ben Holt’s offense surged again, extending the lead to a commanding 10-0. The pressure forced a pitching change for the Reds after two consecutive batters were hit by pitches. #2 Alex Quesada took the mound in relief to stabilize the defense, but the damage was already done.
Over the final two innings, the Bobcats' defense remained impenetrable. In the top of the fourth, Gustine was once again taken down in order to end the inning.
Despite a lead-off walk in the bottom of the fourth and a late walk by Gustine’s #24 Baylor Bloom in the top of the fifth, the Reds couldn’t find the gap. Three pop-ups in the fifth inning sealed the deal, triggering the mercy rule and ending the contest at 10-0.
The Bobcats move forward with momentum, while the Reds will look to bounce back and find more consistency at the plate in their next outing.
