DOS PALOS — The Gustine Reds closed out their preseason schedule on the road Friday night, falling 71-16 to the Dos Palos Broncos in a matchup dominated by the home team’s defense and transition scoring.

Dos Palos opened the game on a 6-0 run, applying fullcourt pressure that immediately disrupted Gustine’s offense. The Reds got on the board when Emilio Caballero sank one of two free throws, later adding another point at the line. The Broncos controlled the rest of the quarter, building a 25-4 lead.

Gustine showed improvement in the second period, moving the ball more effectively and finding success from the perimeter. Alex Palomino knocked down a three-pointer to spark the offense, followed by another shot from beyond the arc by Joao Palomino. Justin Lopes added a putback after an offensive rebound, and Joao Palomino later converted a driving layup while drawing a foul. Despite the surge, Dos Palos continued to score efficiently and took a 46-14 lead into halftime.

The Broncos took full command in the third quarter, holding the Reds scoreless while putting together an 11-0 run to extend the margin to 57-14.

Alex Palomino broke the drought early in the fourth with a midrange jumper, but the deficit remained out of reach as Dos Palos closed out the 71-16 victory.

Gustine leaders: Joao Palomino, 5 points; Alex Palomino, 5; Emilio Caballero, 2; Justin Lopes, 2.

The Reds (0-8) turn their attention to league play, while the Broncos (6-7) carry momentum into the next stretch of their schedule.
