The Gustine High School varsity boys basketball team fell to the Turlock Christian Eagles (2-1) in their non-league season opener on Nov. 28, dropping a 50-30 decision after turnovers stalled the Reds’ offense. Despite a promising start, Gustine struggled to find consistency after the first quarter.

The game opened with an encouraging back-and-forth battle. Gustine’s scoring was led early by #3 Alex Palomino with a two-point shot, followed by #12 Rodrigo Solorio with another basket. #11 Emilio Caballero added points from the free-throw line, sinking two of his 11 attempts. Turlock Christian kept pace, and the score was tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Momentum shifted in the second period as the Eagles’ defense forced numerous Gustine turnovers. Solorio connected on a three-pointer, and Caballero again added points from the line, but the Reds were held to just seven points in the quarter. At halftime, Turlock Christian led 26-19.

The turnover issue continued in the third quarter, giving the Eagles control of the tempo. Caballero went to the line but missed both free throws, while #2 Joao Palomino converted two attempts from the stripe. Turlock Christian extended its lead to 36-21 heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Gustine attempted to rally but the deficit proved too large. Joao Palomino added a two-point basket, while Alex Palomino connected on two three-pointers to highlight the Reds’ late push. Despite the effort, Turlock Christian maintained its advantage and secured the 50-30 win.

Gustine (0-1) will host its annual Rotary Tournament beginning Wednesday, Dec. 3,  at 7 p.m. in Gustine.
