24 hours after beating Gustine High, Orestimba High baseball team fell to Pacheco High School, 17-5, at home on Friday.

The Warriors fell to 2-2 overall, while the Panthers improved to 3-1. Pacheco is now 7-7-1 in all-time matchups against Orestimba, with back-to-back wins against the Warriors.

The Panthers were dominant at the bat as eight different players contributed a run. Leading the team was outfielder Jacob Sanchez with five RBIs, three runs and a double. Joining Sachez was third baseman Nathan Rogers, who finished with four RBIs and two runs. Third baseman Sam Honesto and shortstop Aidan Pikas finished with four and three runs, respectively.

First baseman Ray Montes continued his exceptional start for the Warriors this season with two RBIs and a run in three appearances at bat. Outfielder Jaden Sotelo and second baseman Damian Mendoza followed suit with an RBI and a run each.

Friday’s performance was a far cry from the day prior because the team couldn’t make its routines play such as catching the ball at base to out a batter, resulting in 10 errors , said Orestimba head coach Louie Dominguez. Throughout the game, players at all bases failed to catch crucial throws, which led to Pacheco getting extra bases and scoring more runs.

“[It’s] something we’re gonna have to work on, that’s why we’re worried about playing every inning,” Dominguez said. “When you’re not one of the top teams in baseball, you have to slow the game and try and play anybody.”

Following Pikas’ double to left field, first baseman Mario Rivera batted the ball towards the field to bring Pikas to home base for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Following a Panthers’ hit, shortstop Xander Razo scored a run to extend Pacheco’s lead.

In the top of second, Panthers pulled away in the game with seven runs in the inning. After Pacheco scored to go up 3-0, Rogers hit the ball to the right side of the field and brought in Rivera to extend the lead to four. Sanchez continued the Panthers’ momentum after he batted a double to bring Honesto and Pikas in for a 6-0 lead.

Sanchez later ran to home plate following a single from Rogers to expand the lead to seven. The Panthers closed the inning with two more runs.

After holding Pacheco scoring in top of the third, Orestimba scored their first run of the afternoon after Montes batted a triple to bring Sotelo to home base, 9-1. Montes scored a run following a Warriors hit, but it was already too late to change the outcome of the game as the Panthers scored eight more runs to win.

With less than two weeks left in its non-league schedule, Dominguez said he will use the six games in that stretch to figure out batting rotations.

“We’re trying to figure out all the pieces of the puzzle,” he said. “We got six more games before we start league [play].”

Orestimba will host Modesto High (0-3) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
