With the season underway, Orestimba High baseball team picked up where they left off the day prior as the team defeated Gustine High, 9-3, on Thursday.

The Warriors picked up its second win of the season, while the Reds remained winless at 0-2. After losing five-straight games against its cross-area rival, Orestimba gets its first win against Gustine since April 2023.

First baseman Ray Montes found success at the batter’s box with two RBIs, a run, a triple and a hit. Following was shortstop Axel Diaz and outfielder Jaden Sotelo each recorded two runs.

Gustine struggled to find their rhythm on the mound as they not only allowed runs through hits, but also misthrows. Orestimba head coach Louie Dominguez said the team has to take advantage of their opponent’s mistakes and its focal point in their practices.

“We’re not a very good hitting team, so we have to do everything we can to get all the runs that we can, so that’s a huge bonus for us,” he said. “That’s something we really need to keep doing in the future.”

The Reds took a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning as players celebrated with one another in the dugout. However, that would be the last time they made it to home plate.

With second and third base loaded, Montes struck the ball towards the right side of the field, allowing Sotelo and Diaz to make it to home plate to trail 3-2. Following a Gustine wild pitch, third baseman Robert Corrella ran to home base to tie the game, 3-3. It only got worse for the Reds from that point on.

The Warriors later scored off of another Reds’ wild pitch to lead 4-3 in the bottom of the first. Sotelo made it to home plate following a hit from Diaz. He, in  return, was rewarded a run after Montes struck a double towards midfield, giving Orestimba a 6-3 lead.

Orestimba scored three more runs in the following two innings to begin a three-game home stretch with a win.

The Warriors will look to start a winning streak when Pacheco High (2-1) comes to Newman on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
