Orestimba High baseball team won its third-consecutive game following a close 9-8 win against Mariposa County High School on Saturday.

Saturday’s contest was a back-and-forth affair that was decided in the final play. After Mariposa scored a run to trail by one in the top of the seventh inning, they had an opportunity to tie or take the lead with a player on second base while a hitter approaches home base. With two outs on the Grizzlies, the Warriors caught the fly ball to end the game.

With the win, Orestimba improved 5-2 overall, while Mariposa remained winless at 0-6.

During the winning streak, the Warriors have won two games that were decided by a run. Head coach Louie Dominguez said he attributes the players’ effort and engagement in close situations as a benefactor to the team’s recent success.

“We’re not doing anything crazy, we’re just competing,” Dominguez said. “So that’s all we can ask.”

Orestimba outfielder Jaden Sotelo recorded his best performance of the season with two RBIs, a run and a triple against the Grizzlies. Outfielders Mason Fernandez, Richie Rivas and catcher Adrian Gonzalez each contributed an RBI.

For Mariposa, utility outfielder Reid Allison and third baseman Mason Bissmeyer brought in three RBIs each. Second baseman Drew Carter brought in two runs.

After a scoreless opening inning, the Grizzlies amassed four runs for a four-point lead in top of the second. The Warriors, in the bottom of the inning, responded with five runs to take the lead afterwards.

After Mariposa took back the lead, Orestimba scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a two-point lead. The Warriors’ lead expanded to three with the help of a homerun from Gonzalez in the fourth.

The Grizzlies scored a run in the fifth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough to win.

As the team is finding its rhythm near the latter half of its non-league schedule, one aspect that’s been a cause for concern is the amount of walks allowed, Dominguez said. Orestimba allowed 10 walks.

“We are walking way too many people. We had walks today, and that’s just too many,” he said.

The Warriors will travel to Le Grand High School (2-3) on Tuesday with the first pitch at 3:30 p.m.
