After two losses and a tie, Orestimba High boys soccer team are now back in the win column after defeating Sonora High, 4-2, for its first win in Trans-Valley League play on Friday.

Orestimba improves to 6-5-5 overall and 1-2-1 against TVL competition. They also tied a season-high in scoring with goals from three different players.

Leading the Warriors was midfielder Adrian Figueroa with two goals, accumulating his total to three this season. Following him were midfielders Bryant Lopez and Rey Corona, who each contributed a goal.

After falling to a 2-0 deficit early in the match, Warriors head coach Jose Serratos said his players weren’t discouraged and focused on playing as a team. “Just believe in what we can do as a team, play as a team, and they did it,” Serratos said.

After going scoreless in the first 13 minutes of Friday’s match, Sonora scored the first goal of the evening a minute later. Wildcats’ Sammy Villifina kicked the ball towards the left side of the goal past Orestimba goalkeeper Julian Lopez for a 1-0 lead.

Villifina, a minute later, dribbled the ball down the field and collided with Orestimba defender Isarel Ramirez, who was assessed a yellow card, resulting in a free kick. Villifina converted the free kick to extend the Wildcats’ lead to two.

The Warriors responded with a goal of its own five minutes later. Corona dribbled past two Sonora defenders and kicked the ball toward the upper left corner of the goal to cut the deficit to one.

After getting their shot attempt caught by Julian Lopez, Sonora committed a foul to Figueroa in the 23rd minute, giving Orestimba a chance to tie the game. Figueroa scored the free kick to tie the match at 2 points apiece.

Off of a throw-in, Bryant Lopez kicked the ball towards the right side of the goal to give Orestimba a 3-2 lead in the 29th minute.

Orestimba continued its momentum with another goal eight minutes later, but in an unusual way. Following a Warriors’ throw-in, Figueroa kicked the ball towards the Wildcats’ goal, but it was stopped by Villifina. Villifina, however, was in the goal area, which resulted in an automatic goal for Orestimba. The Warriors concluded the first half with a 4-2 lead.

After not scoring to open the second half, Sonora’s Chase Castle scored a header to cut the Warriors’ lead to one in the 57th minute.

Throughout the rest of the match, both teams moved the ball past midfield, but couldn’t convert on shot attempts at goal. Murphy Sullivan nearly tied the match with his shot attempt, but the ball was caught by Julian Lopez. Orestimba went on to win the TVL matchup.

The Warriors will continue its TVL slate when they travel to Ripon High on Wednesday. Kickoff for Wednesday’s match will begin at 6 p.m.

With much of league play still to continue, Serratos said the team are fully healthy now, which has been a lingering matter to start the season.

“We have to keep working, regardless of who’s here or not, we have everybody, which is good, and we’ll keep working,” Serratos said. “We have Ripon next, we’ll keep working to hopefully try to get a win.”
