SAN ANDREAS, Calif – After finishing third place in the Trans-Valley League this season, the Orestimba High softball team was looking to make some noise in the postseason.
But Calaveras’ squad altered the Warriors’ plans.
Making the trek to the foothills in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Softball – Division V on May 14, No. 10 Orestimba took on No. 7 Calaveras, which is part of the Mother Lodi League. The host Red Hawks came away with a 6-2 win.
Calaveras wasted no time in scoring first on Orestimba (14-12 overall), which finished with a 7-3 mark in the TVL. The Red Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
But the Warriors battled back in the top of the fourth frame, scoring two runs to trim the Red Hawks’ lead to 4-2. But Calaveras cushioned its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with two more runs to secure the win.
Another perk for the Red Hawks was their pitcher Kamryn Thornburg held the Warriors to only one hit: a single off the bat of Rae Oliveros. Thornburg struck out 15 Orestimba batters and walked one.
Oliveros and Warrior teammate Natalie Corella scored the team’s only runs in the fourth. Hailey Starr drove in a run.
