Orestimba track and field earn some top ten finishes at TVL championship

The Orestimba track team competed at the TVL Varsity Championships on May 8, with the women’s team nabbing a fourth place finish out of seven teams and the men finishing in sixth place.

Sophomore Samantha De La Cruz brought home a first place finish for Orestimba in the 800-meters race with a time of 2:22.75.

De La Cruz then turned around and had another super race in the 1600-meters, taking first place with a time of 5:18.11, which was a personal record.

Junior Marian Quevedo grabbed a second place finish in the 100-meters hurdles, with a time of 16.29. Kimberly Hurtado, a sophomore, finished in eighth place in the same race, with a time of 19.63.

Quevedo had more in her tank, taking a third place finish in the 300-meters hurdles with a time of 47.24, which was a personal record.

Sophomore Imelda Beltran-Pelayo finished fifth in the varsity women’s 400-meter race with a time of 1:02.01, while junior Mariah Moreno took seventh in the same race, with a time of 1:03.83.

The 4x400 women’s relay team of Moreno, De La Cruz, Quevedo and Beltran-Pelayo turned in a third-place finish with a time of 4:12.59.

In the women’s field events, senior Olivia Gray earned a fifth place finish in the high jump event with a jump of 4’7”.

In the long jump, Orestimba took three of the top ten positions. Junior Maddie Perez was third with a jump of 15’ 5.5”, Beltran-Pelayo was fourth with a jump of 15’ 5” and senior Jordan Mello was ninth with a distance of 14’ 6.5”.

Beltran-Pelayo wasn’t finished with her day. She earned a second place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 33’ 6.75. Mello came in fourth in the same event with a jump of 33’ 2” and Gray was fifth with a distance of 32’ 10”. Perez took seventh with a jump of 31’ 10”.

For the men’s team, Jhonathan Romero took seventh in the 400-meters race with a time of 52.79, which was a personal record. Just behind him was junior Ilja Skocek, who had a finish of 53.09 for eighth place. It also was a personal record for him.

In the 1600-meters race, Patricio Kearney finished in second place with a time of 4:26.15, a personal record for the senior. Sophomore Joseph Garcia closed out the top ten with a time of 5:03.58.

Kearney turned in another winning performance in the 3200-meters race with a time of 9:46.40, which was good for second place. Emmanuel Garabito finished in tenth place with a time of 11:14.81, which was a personal record for the freshman runner.

Freshman Israel Ramirez took second place in the 100-meters hurdles with a time of 16.27. Freshman Jeremiah Byrd took seventh in the same race with a time of 17.60, which was a full second faster than his previous personal record.

The 4x400 relay team of Connor Orr, Romero, Skocek and Kearney finished in fourth place with a time of 3:40.15.

In the discus event, junior Traveyon Wright, Jr. finished in seventh with a distance of 114’ 10.5”.

In the long jump, freshman Brett Gray finished in tenth place with a jump of 17’ 9”.

Orestimba will compete in the division prelims for their league on Wednesday at Riverbank High School.
