Early in the Orestimba High track and field team’s season, senior Marian Quevedo has continued to set the bar high.
Through the first two meets, Quevedo has won four events while cementing herself in the program’s record books. Last week in the 17th Annual Dean Andreeseen Classic in Merced, the senior athlete participated in the girls varsity 100-meter hurdle. She not only took first place but ushered herself as the school’s fastest runner in the event at a time of 15.87 seconds.
This success wasn’t done overnight, but through countless reputations, said Orestimba head coach Charles Kothenbeutel. From researching the event to handling setbacks, Quevedo, he said, wants to be perfect.
“There’s moments where, especially within hurdles, one little mistake can catch you up, and she (Quevedo) has done a good job of just understanding that and realizing that, ‘Hey, it’s still one meet at a time. One race at a time,’” Kothenbeutel said.
The senior athlete remains unfazed during the Stanislaus County Championships where she led the Warriors to three first-place finishes on Friday at Riverbank High School.
In her first event of the afternoon, Quevedo won the women’s 100-meter hurdles event where she clocked in a time of 15.24 seconds, a new personal record. Less than a week after she made school history, the senior athlete eclipsed her then-record time to once again hold a faster time. After winning the event, Quevedo was immediately felicitated by Kothenbeutel alongside co-head coach Nicole Swisher and her teammates.
Quevedo continued her momentum in the women’s 300-meter hurdles where she clocked in 47.56 to finish in first place, 2.08 faster than Pitman High’s Nayeli Mattison. Her time is the school’s second fastest all-time time in the event with the fastest being her time of 47.24 in last season’s Trans-Valley League Championships.
The women’s 4x400-meter relay was a spectacle from start to finish. Following the end of the first stride, Mariah Moreno was behind two runners. After exchanging the baton to Samantha De La Cruz, Orestimba was in between second and third place. With Gregori High ahead in the third lap, the Warriors needed this moment for a lead. As Quevedo received the baton from De La Cruz, her impact was immediate as she sprinted past Claire Gornick to build a lead with one lap remaining. Imelda Beltran finished what her teammates started as Orestimba won the event with a time of 4:16.55.
The Warriors also had six top five-finishes throughout multiple events at Friday’s meet.
Israel Ramirez clocked in a time of 15.59 seconds for a second-place finish in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. He was 0.67 seconds behind Pitman’s Dante Jenkins. Despite the runner-up finish, Ramirez now holds the school’s fastest time in the event as broke Peter Junkin’s record time of 17.17.
In the women's 400-meter race, Beltran and De La Cruz finished in third and fifth place, respectively. Beltran ran a time of 1:03.68 while De La Cruz clocked in 1:04.89.
Beltran continued her momentum in the women’s long jump event where she leaped 16-1.00 for third place. In the women’s triple jump, she placed fourth with a jump of 34-1.50.
Brett Gray leaped 39-1.00 in the men’s triple jump for a fifth-place finish.
Orestimba will travel up north to Sonora High on Wednesday for the TVL Championships. The first event will begin at 2 p.m.
