GUSTINE — The Gustine Reds flag football team suffered a tough home loss Thursday night, falling 25-6 to the River Islands Riptide. The defeat dropped Gustine’s season record to 3-11, while River Islands improved to 6-6 with their third consecutive win.
The Reds struggled to gain momentum against the Riptide, who pulled ahead early and maintained control throughout the game. Gustine’s lone touchdown wasn’t enough to close the gap, and the team now turns its focus to a high-stakes rivalry matchup.
Gustine will host Mariposa County at 6 p.m. Tuesday in what could be a pivotal moment for the Reds. The Grizzlies, currently 13-5, are riding a four-game win streak after defeating the Bruins 31-13 on Thursday. Ranked 248th in MaxPreps’ California flag football standings, Mariposa County holds a significant edge over the Bruins, who sit at 649th.
The Reds have yet to beat Mariposa County in their last three meetings, including a lopsided 64-6 loss in September 2024. But with home-field advantage and a chance to shake up the standings, Gustine hopes to turn the tide.
Tuesday’s game marks a key moment in inter-league play, with River Islands also set to face Millennium at 6 p.m. the same evening.
Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Reds as they look to bounce back and rewrite their rivalry record.
