Merced, CA – The Merced County 2nd Annual All-Star Boys Tackle Football game delivered on its promise of gridiron excitement Saturday night, as the South All-Stars emerged victorious over the North All-Stars in a hard-fought battle ending with a final score of 19-13. The game was a showcase of local talent, featuring big plays, defensive stands, and plenty of heart from both sides.
The North All-Stars started strong, with Dylan McCauley hauling in a 20-yard receiving touchdown to put points on the board. However, the South’s defense proved to be a formidable force throughout the evening. Early on, Nicolas Cuevas made a crucial tackle off the kickoff, setting a physical tone.
The first half saw both teams trading blows. The South’s defense continued to shine, with Bradlee Green delivering a highlight-reel hit stick tackle. On another key possession, Austin Ethridge the only Gustine High School player to make it to the All-Star Football Game burst through the North’s offensive line for a 1-yard sack, forcing a crucial 4th down turnover on downs after an earlier tipped pass by. Austin also stymied a North drive. Austin continued his dominant performance with another timely tackle.
The South offense, led by some impressive plays, began to find its rhythm. Junior Silva proved to be a versatile weapon, making a key tackle on the punt and later breaking free for a good 5-yard run. The biggest offensive play of the night for the South came when Jacob Valenzuela connected with Silva on a 30-yard pass, which Silva then turned into an impressive 40-yard gain, sparking a scoring drive that resulted in a South touchdown.
As the game wore on, Valenzuela’s elusiveness was on full display, as he converted a crucial scramble for a first down. The South’s momentum continued, leading to another touchdown, extending their lead. The North, however, wouldn't back down, as Junior Silva showcased his speed with a 30-yard kick return, giving the North good field position. Valenzuela once again found Silva, this time on a 20-yard pass that Silva stretched into a 40-yard pass play, keeping the North’s hopes alive.
Ultimately, the South All-Stars held strong against the North's late surge, securing the 19-13 victory in a game that truly highlighted the talent and dedication of Merced County's young football stars.
