NEWMAN — The Orestimba High School volleyball team saw its momentum stall Thursday night following a decisive home victory earlier in the week.
Fresh off a 3-0 sweep of Modesto on Wednesday, the Warriors were unable to carry that energy into their matchup against Sonora, falling in straight sets: 25-6, 25-17, 25-15. The loss marked Orestimba’s fifth consecutive defeat to the Wildcats and dropped the Warriors’ overall record to 4-7. Sonora improved to a perfect 11-0.
Orestimba had looked sharp less than 24 hours earlier, dispatching Modesto with set scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-18. The win was the Warriors’ first at home this season and their fourth straight against the Panthers. Modesto, now 5-16, has lost eight consecutive road games dating back to last season.
The Warriors will look to rebound Tuesday when they host Ripon at 7 p.m. The Indians enter the matchup with a 12-2 record.
Gustine volleyball drops two straight, extends losing streak to four
GUSTINE — The Gustine High School volleyball team continued to struggle this week, dropping back-to-back matches and extending its losing streak to four.
The Reds fell 3-0 to Le Grand on Monday, with set scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-22. The loss echoed their previous defeat to the Bulldogs last October, when Gustine managed to take one set in a 3-1 outcome.
Despite the sweep, Gustine saw standout performances from Adamaris Sierra and Jaclynn Lopez. Sierra recorded seven digs, five kills and five aces, while Lopez added six aces, five kills and four digs. Lopez has tallied at least five kills in every match this season. Syrena Chacon also contributed defensively with 10 digs.
Gustine’s record dropped to 2-5 following the loss.
Two days later, the Reds were unable to rebound, falling 3-0 to Mariposa County. The Grizzlies, who also defeated Gustine last October, continued their strong run with set scores that were not disclosed. The win marked Mariposa County’s seventh in their last eight games, improving their season record to 12-6. Gustine fell to 2-6.
The Reds will look to regroup on the road Monday when they face Waterford at 6 p.m.
Orestimba girls’ golf eyes first win against Escalon
NEWMAN — The Orestimba High girls’ golf team will look to notch its first win of the season when it faces Escalon at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Golf Course.
The Warriors field a lean but determined squad of four — seniors Juliette Waite, Mia Casteneda, Klaudia Hey, and sophomore Izabella Rodriguez — the minimum number required to compete in league play.
Coach Mark May said the small-school competition has been especially tough this year. Orestimba struggled in last week’s match against Ripon Christian, but May remains optimistic.
“Golf is a funny game,” he said. “A few bad holes can throw you off your game. I told them to forget about it and go on to the next.”
