GUSTINE—The fate of L & E Cafe and More remains unclear as the beloved local eatery has been unexpectedly closed for a bit more than a week now, leaving customers to wonder whether its doors have shut permanently or if this is only a temporary pause.

Calls and messages have gone unanswered, with no official statement regarding the cafe’s status. The last social media update, posted on April 11, had hinted at an expansion into more breakfast offerings, giving no indication of an impending closure.

Since opening a few years ago, L & E Cafe and More quickly became a favorite among Gustine residents, earning a reputation for its flavorful bagels, tempting desserts, refreshing smoothies, and highly sought-after pit chicken. Locals embraced the café’s welcoming atmosphere, returning for both the food and the family-like hospitality offered by its owners.

Opened by Elias Perez and Lucia Téllez, L & E Cafe and More has been a staple in the Gustine community, serving as a gathering place where customers were treated like family. The cafe’s journey has been one of resilience, particularly in the wake of Elias’ medical crisis.

Elias’ medical crisis began in November when he suffered an aneurysm, an unexpected and life-altering event that left him in a coma for a month. When he woke, he was unable to move, and the road to recovery was daunting. After another month in the hospital, he slowly started therapy, taking small but determined steps toward regaining mobility. His wife, Lucia, was by his side every step of the way, balancing the immense challenge of caring for him while keeping their café running.

The Gustine community rallied behind the family, offering unwavering support in the face of adversity. Loyal customers continued visiting the café even when they found the doors unexpectedly closed, understanding the strain that Elias’ condition placed on daily operations. Some residents who had experienced strokes and aneurysms themselves came forward to share words of encouragement, assuring Elias that with time and therapy, recovery was possible.

Recognizing the financial strain the couple faced—managing both business expenses and mounting medical bills—Gustine resident Julie Renae Aguiniga launched a GoFundMe to ease their burden. She emphasized that Elias and Lucia would never ask for help themselves, but that community contributions could make a difference in keeping their café open and funding Elias’ treatment. At last check, the effort had raised $1,650. The gesture was a testament to the deep connection L & E Cafe and More had fostered within the community.

Now, as the café’s future remains uncertain, customers hope for clarity on whether the closure is permanent or temporary. No matter the outcome, Elias and Lucia’s story serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of small business owners—and the community that stands behind them in times of hardship.
