Gustine Library plans full slate of August programs
With August underway, the Gustine Library has a full calendar of activities for children, teens and adults throughout the month.
The library, located at 205 Sixth St., will continue its regular lineup of Tiny Tales StoryTime for ages 3–5 and Family Lego Fun Time, both offered multiple Saturdays in August. Storytime is scheduled for Aug. 1, 22 and 29 at 10:30 a.m., with Lego sessions at 1 p.m. on those same dates, along with an additional Lego day on Aug. 8 and Aug. 15.
Teen programming includes Teen Coloring on Aug. 4 at 3:30 p.m., a Button Making Workshop on Aug. 11 at 3 p.m., and Switch Game Time on Aug. 18 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
For younger children, Kid’s Craft Time will be held Aug. 6 at 3 p.m., and Kids Chalk Day is scheduled all day on Aug. 20.
Adults can take part in the Adult Book Club on Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. and Adult Coloring on Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. A community Crafternoon for all ages is planned for Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.
The library is also offering an ongoing I Spy Sea Creatures Game for ages 6–12, where participants search the library for sea‑themed items and earn a prize for completing the log.
The Gustine Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Gustine Historical Museum adds Sunday hours
The Gustine Historical Museum has expanded its public hours and will now be open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., the museum announced.
Visitors can stop in to explore local history, view exhibits and learn more about Gustine’s past during the new weekend hours. Those who prefer a private visit or cannot attend on Sundays may schedule an appointment.

The museum continues to operate as a volunteer‑run community resource preserving Gustine’s heritage.
VFW, American Legion to host Aug. 18 barbecue in Gustine
VFW Post 7635 and American Legion Post 240 will team up with their auxiliaries to host a community barbecue at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Gustine.
All local veterans and their families are invited, and membership in either post is not required. The event is free to attend, though guests are asked to bring their own meat to barbecue and a table setting. Salads, sides and desserts will be provided by the VFW Auxiliary 7635 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 240.

Turlock Mosquito Abatement District schedules aerial spraying this week
The Turlock Mosquito Abatement District has scheduled aerial mosquito‑control flights this week as temperatures begin to cool.
Spraying is planned for Monday, Aug. 12, over Patterson, Ceres, Keyes, rural north Denair and Hickman. Additional flights are set for Tuesday, Aug. 13, covering Newman, Turlock and Denair. Operations are expected to begin around 9 p.m. each night.

OHS announces adult evening lap swim schedule for week of Aug. 10
Orestimba High School will offer adult evening lap swim sessions this week, with times varying by day.
Lap swim will be held Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. All sessions are for adults 18 and older.
Admission is $4 per session, or $3 for seniors 55 and older. Cash only is accepted. Pool noodles, kickboards and water weights will be available, and the pool is heated to about 85 degrees.
Sessions take place at OHS, 707 Hardin Road in Newman. The schedule is subject to change depending on weather; the pool will remain open in rain but will close if thunder or lightning occurs.
Youth soccer league prepares to launch season in Newman
Newman Youth Soccer has released its timeline for the start of the upcoming youth soccer season, with coaches and families set to begin preparations throughout August.
During the week of Aug. 10, coaches will pick up team rosters and coaching materials. Team practices are expected to begin the following week, starting Aug. 17.
Between Aug. 17 and Aug. 24, coaches will contact families by phone or text with their team’s practice day, time and location. League organizers are asking parents to be patient as coaches — all volunteers — work through rosters, organize schedules and prepare for the season.
Families who do not hear from a coach immediately are encouraged not to worry, as outreach will continue through Aug. 24.
Newman Youth Soccer thanked families for their support and said they look forward to seeing players on the field soon.
Newman Police Department to host Aug. 14 Coffee with a Cop event
Local residents are invited to meet Newman police officers over coffee during a Coffee with a Cop event scheduled for Friday, Aug. 14, at Starbucks, 2005 N Street in Newman.
The event will run from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and is designed to give community members an informal opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and get to know the officers who serve their neighborhood. The national Coffee with a Cop program aims to break down barriers between police and the public by creating space for open conversation without agendas.

Gustine Aquatics Center announces end‑of‑season schedule
The City of Gustine Recreation Department has released its end‑of‑season schedule for the Gustine Aquatics Center as lifeguards prepare to return to school and summer operations wind down.
Beginning Aug. 17, open swim hours will shift to 5 to 8 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. The final day of open swim is currently scheduled for Aug. 21.
City staff noted that the pool may close earlier than expected if participation drops during the remaining sessions. The department is encouraging residents to take advantage of the last days of summer while the pool remains open.
Recreation officials thanked the community for its support throughout the season.
