Authorities warn of bail bond scam targeting families
Scams
Scams are a continuous problem and everyone needs to be on their guard. Safeguard your personal information and avoid paying out any money without first conducting thorough research.

MODESTO — Local officials are alerting the public to a scam involving individuals posing as bail bond agents and requesting money through digital payment platforms.

In one recent case, a family received a call from someone claiming to be a bond agent and was asked to send $1,250 via Zelle to secure the release of a loved one to an ankle monitor. Authorities say this is not a legitimate process.

“Bail bond agents do not contact families directly to request money for ankle monitor releases,” officials said in a public advisory.

Victims have reported sending money under the belief that their loved ones would be released from custody, only to discover they had been defrauded.

Officials urge anyone receiving such calls to take the following precautions:

  • Do not send money.
  • Do not provide personal information.
  • Contact your local law enforcement or supervision agency directly to verify any claims.
