Newman man arrested on suspicion of DUI after hit‑and‑run
A Newman man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after allegedly hitting a parked vehicle and fleeing the scene, police said.
Officers responded to the Dollar General parking lot on N Street after a caller reported his parked vehicle had been struck by a gray Honda that left northbound. The caller provided the license plate number, which led officers to an apartment complex where the vehicle was registered.
Police found the Honda with the driver, Demetrio Lopez Mantar, still inside. The reporting party later confirmed Lopez Mantar was the person seen driving at the time of the collision, according to the report.
Officers said Lopez Mantar showed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot, watery eyes and the smell of alcohol. He refused field sobriety tests, but a breath test measured his blood‑alcohol level at 0.28%. His vehicle was towed.
Lopez Mantar was arrested on suspicion of DUI and on an outstanding Stanislaus County warrant. The reporting party declined to press charges for the hit‑and‑run.
Arrests
Demetrio Lopez Mantar, 29, of Newman was arrested on Feb. 2 for DUI, DUI of .08 or more, driving on a license suspended for DUI and a warrant arrest.
