GPD: No u-turns in downtown Gustine and big rigs only allowed to park on truck routes

The Gustine Police Department has issued a reminder to residents about some issues that have been causing troubles on local roads. The first involves where overweight vehicles are allowed to park and the second is about U-turns in downtown Gustine.

The City of Gustine has a restriction in place for where overweight vehicles can park. The restriction only allows parking of overweight vehicles on designated truck routes. The construction of truck route roadways are better reinforced than other roads to allow for the extra weight. Parking overweight vehicles on roads other than truck routes can cause damage to the roads.

The following streets and portions of streets are designated as truck routes in Gustine:

East Avenue—North city limits to south city limits

Railroad Avenue—South Avenue to south city limits

South Avenue—Fourth Street to East Avenue

Second Street—Second Avenue to North Avenue (Hwy 140)

Third Street—North Avenue (Hwy 140) to Third Avenue

First Avenue—Fifth Street to Fourth Street

Second Avenue—East Avenue to alley west of Second Street

Third Avenue—East Avenue to Fourth Street

Fourth Avenue—Alley one-half block west of Fourth Street to Fourth Street

Fifth Avenue—Alley one-half block west of Fourth Street to railroad tracks

Sullivan Road—Highway 33/140 to Hunt Road

When a violation is observed, it is the discretion of the officer to warn or issue a citation.

The second issue the police department is reminding residents of is that there are no U-turns allowed in downtown Gustine.

“While is seems legal and safe to pull into a parking spot on the opposite side of the roadway, it is technically crossing a set of double lines and making a U-Turn which is not allowed,” the police department stated.

Section CVC 22102 states that “no person in a business district shall make a U-turn, except at an intersection, or on a divided highway where an opening has been provided…this turning movement shall be made as close as practicable to the extreme left-hand edge of the lanes moving in the driver’s direction of travel immediately prior to the initiation of the turning movement…”

This includes intersections where it’s prohibited by posted signage, which is the case in downtown Gustine.
