GUSTINE, Calif. — A gas main leak that forced the evacuation of several city blocks in Gustine on Friday has been contained, and residents were allowed to return home after a swift response by emergency crews and PG&E.

The leak, located near 2nd Avenue between 5th and 6th streets, prompted road closures and shut down nearby businesses, including WhichCraft Tap Room, Family Dollar, and Saputo’s, which sent workers home as a precaution, said Gustine Police spokesman Eddie Gonzales.

About a dozen residents sought temporary shelter at the Al Goman Center, Gonzales said.

According to city officials, PG&E crews successfully contained the leak, and utility lines have been secured and are now under continued monitoring. All roads were reopened and the evacuation order was lifted as of Friday evening.

“We’d like to thank our residents for their patience and cooperation throughout this incident. Thanks to the swift action of our emergency crews and utility partners, we were able to mitigate risk and restore safety quickly,” the city stated in a release.

Crews from Gustine Public Works, the Newman Police Department, Merced County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and Cal Fire worked alongside PG&E to secure the area. No injuries were reported.

The City of Gustine said a full report on the incident — including the cause of the leak — will be released on Tuesday, after press deadlines.

Residents are encouraged to report any lingering concerns to the city’s dispatch center at (209) 854-1010.
