A commendable commitment to environmental responsibility took center stage on Feb. 20 at the Gustine City Council meeting. Recycler of The Year awards, for 2022 and 2023 were presented. This annual accolade is presented by Mid Valley Disposal and recognizes businesses that excel in waste management. Coast Hardware honored for 2022 and Pusateri Nut Co. for 2023.

“We select businesses in the city that go above and beyond to do a fantastic job at separating out their waste,” said Recycling Programs Manager at Mid Valley Disposal Billie Hansen

The criteria for selection extends beyond compliance. It is focusing on businesses that actively participate in recycling programs and exhibit strong communication and collaboration with recycling coordinators.

“It’s a decision between the recycling coordinator, the drivers that are there week after week, and our operations team to make that selection,” said Hansen.

It’s all a team effort in the decisions. There are nods from the workers on the ground to the separation. A collaborative nature of the decision-making process, involving recycling coordinators, dedicated drivers, and the operational team. A meticulous approach ensures that the awardees truly stand out in their commitment to sustainable practices.

The recognition extends beyond a mere acknowledgment. Aiming to encourage a culture of environmental awareness within the Gustine community. Recycler of The Year awards the business community well-deserved recognition.

“And then we get to present that award every year or so. We think it’s just a nice thing to do for the community to recognize the people that are doing the hard work,” said Hansen.

Coast Hardware and Pusateri Nut Co. have set the bar high for themselves. They are demonstrating that businesses can play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable practices. As Gustine applauds them, the City Council reinforces the importance of collective efforts in creating a greener and more eco-conscious community.
