GUSTINE — The Gustine High School flag football team closed out its season Thursday with a 21-0 road loss to the Mariposa County Grizzlies, capping a challenging final stretch that saw the Reds drop eight straight games.
The defeat marked the end of the regular season for Gustine, which finished with an overall record of 3-18 and 1-9 in league play.
Earlier in the week, the Reds fell 27-0 to the River Islands Riptide on Tuesday, followed by a 35-7 loss to the Millennium Falcons on Thursday, Oct. 16. In both matchups, Gustine struggled to find offensive momentum, trailing 28-0 at halftime against Millennium and unable to score against River Islands.
Despite the tough finish, several players stood out statistically over the course of the season. Sophomore Jacqueline Chavez led the team in receiving yards with an average of 24.0 yards per game and totaled an impressive 46 touchdowns. Senior Clarissa Toledo Guerrero followed with 16.7 receiving yards per game, while junior Estrella Ponce Gutierrez added 12.0.
On the ground, sophomore Hailey Haro led the rushing attack with 20.0 yards per game and five total touchdowns. Daryana Elizalde averaged 12.0 rushing yards, and junior Angelina Barajas contributed 3.3.
Defensively, Barajas also led the team in tackles with 3.0 per game, followed by Jimena Chavez Perez with 2.5 and Ponce Gutierrez with 2.4.
While the scoreboard didn’t always reflect their effort, the Reds showed resilience and growth throughout the season. With a strong core of underclassmen returning, Gustine will look to build on its experience and come back stronger next year.
