Playing its final road match of the season, Gustine girls soccer team were shutout, 8-0, against Denair High on Monday at Jack W. Lytton Stadium.

The Reds fell to 4-13 and 3-8 in Southern Athletic League play, while the Coyotes improved to 11-3-4 overall and 8-1-1 against league opponents to stay firmly in second place in the SAL standings.

Throughout the match, Gustine couldn’t stop Denair’s scoring duo of Jazmin and Galilea Padilla. Jazmin Padilla recorded her first-ever haul-trick performance with seven goals, which increased her season total to 44 goals. Her younger sister, Galilea Padilla, recorded a goal to increase her total of the season to eight.

Having coached against Jazmin Padilla the past two seasons, Gustine head coach Jose Gallardo praised the junior forward’s ability to make contested shots, calling her an "unbelievable player.”

“She’s a pretty good player,” Gallardo said. “She’s been one of those girls our defense has to pretty much [stop] her.”

Galilea Padilla didn’t waste any time to score the first goal of the afternoon as she kicked the ball towards the upper right side of the goal to put Denair ahead 1-0 in the fourth minute. Three minutes later, Jazmin Padilla delivered her first goal after she dribbled past two Reds defenders to double the Coyotes’ lead.

Jazmin Padilla, once again, scored another goal in the 12th minute to extend Denair’s lead to three. She followed up a minute later with third goal to make it 4-0. With the first half coming to an end, Gustine keeper Elizabeth Meza blocked Jazmin Padilla’s shot attempt, but the ball ricocheted off of her hands which gave the junior forward another chance to score to give Denair a five-point lead going into halftime.

The Reds’ struggles carried into the second half as with every Gustine missed shot led to Jazmin Padilla’s scored goals in the 52nd and 53rd minutes. She concluded her performance by scoring her seventh goal in the 56th minute.

Gustine will conclude its regular season with the team host Le Grand High (4-13-3) (3-6-2 SAL) on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. kickoff. Both teams previously matched up on Jan. 20 when Gustine were shutout on the road, 6-0.

While this will also be the final game for five senior players, the mentality going in is to take it one game at a time, Gallardo said.

“We win as a team and we lose as a team,” he said. “We just need to step up our game more, and, I mean, take it a game at a time.”
