As the end of the regular season approaches, Orestimba High boys soccer team narrowly fell to Hughson High, 2-1, on Friday at Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors fell to 7-10-4 overall and 2-7-2 in Trans-Valley League play, while the Huskies improved to 7-8-3 and 3-6-2 against TVL opponents.
Luis Moreno and Cooper Nobles each contributed a goal for Hughson, increasing their season total to 13 and two goals, respectively. Midfielder Bryant Lopez scored Orestimba’s lone goal and increased his season total to six goals.
Last month’s matchup between both teams ended with a 2-2 tie. Warriors head coach Jose Serrato said the difference this time around was his team’s passing game was not fluid as previously was.
“[Hughson] played a little bit better than us,” Serrato said. “[We] weren’t combining with each other, so that’s probably the main thing.”
Orestimba scored the first goal of the evening in the fourth minute after Lopez netted the ball through the right side of Hughson’s goalie for a 1-0 lead. After missing on their first couple shots, Nobles tied the match with a goal of his own for Hughson in the 22nd minute.
After stopping the Warriors from going past midfield, Hughson took a 2-1 lead in the final minute of the first half following a goal from Moreno.
Both teams missed on multiple shots at goal as it continued to be a one-score affair in the second half. After dribbling past three Huskies defenders, Warriors midfielder Adrian Figueroa nearly tied the match after his shot attempt went near the right side of the goal post in the 59th minute.
After forward Moises Ramirez got a last-second stop on Hughson’s shot at goal, Orestimba missed another chance in the 75th minute. The Huskies continued to move the ball in the remaining minutes to win the match.
The Warriors will play its final game of the season when the team hosts Ripon Christian (8-7-2) (7-3-1 TVL) on Monday for a 5:15 p.m. kickoff. Monday’s match will also be a senior night as the team will commemorate seven senior players’ accomplishments. Serrato said the match could add motivation for the players to end what has been a season to forget for the program.
“We just want to play better overall,” he said. “Everybody will have a chance to get out there and just be better as a team.”
