Orestimba basketball players are transitioning from lacing up the football cleats to now lacing up those basketball shoes on the hardwood floor as the 2019-20 basketball season approaches.

Gustine High will field a team long on varsity experience in the upcoming girls basketball season, bolstering the Lady Reds’ hopes to return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2014-15 Southern League championship season.

A solid season for the Orestimba Lady Warriors came to a close last Tuesday in Calaveras, where the Mighty Reds prevailed over the West Siders 25-11, 25-15, 25-19 in Division IV playoff action.

Orestimba turned in one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season Friday, lighting up the scoreboard in a 55-14 frosh-soph win over visiting Delhi.

Orestimba teams turned in a dominant showing at the Southern League cross country finals Friday, placing first in the women’s competition and finishing second to Waterford by the narrowest of margins in the men’s race.

With upsets abounding across the college football landscape last weekend no Mattos Newspapers Football Contest participant approached perfection.

Orestimba hosted a senior night program prior to the start of the varsity football game Friday. Senior cheerleaders, band members and football players were recognized.

The varsity Reds were looking to treat their fans to a homecoming victory Friday, only to come up a touchdown short against Southern League foe Le Grand.


Orestimba officially punched its ticket to the post-season with a pair of Southern League volleyball victories last week.

Lady Red Tianah Vitorino hits in a varsity match against visiting Delhi last Tuesday. Gustine and Delhi battled through five games before the Hawks prevailed 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 16-25, 15-6. Later in the week, Ripon Christian defeated Gustine 25-27, 25-9, 25-9, 25-3. 

Orestimba golfers Ryanne Alcala, left, and Sydney Bazar qualified for the section Division V tournament with strong showings in the Valley Foothill League South finals. The section tournament was played Monday in Auburn, where Alcala shot a 133 and Bazar carded a 137.

Gabriell Swisher serves for the frosh-soph Lady Warriors against visiting Denair last Tuesday. Orestimba defeated the Coyotes 25-5, 25-14. Later in the week, the JV Lady Warriors prevailed over Waterford 25-12, 25-19. 

Jasmine Reynoso makes the defensive play for the frosh-soph Lady Reds against Delhi. Gustine came away with a 25-14, 26-24 victory. Later in the week, Gustine dropped an 18-25, 21-25 decision to Ripon Christian. 

Southern League co-leader Ripon Christian lived up to its billing Friday night.
