Frosh-soph Lady Warrior Natalie Velasquez receives a serve against visiting Delhi in Orestimba’s league volleyball opener last Tuesday. Orestimba posted a 25-12, 25-7 win over the Hawks. Later in the week, Orestimba dropped an 18-25, 20-25 decision at Mariposa.

Gustine’s Joselin Tovar makes the defensive play for the frosh-soph Lady Reds in their Southern League opener against visiting Mariposa last Tuesday. The JV Lady Reds dropped a 14-25, 25-19, 3-15 decision to the Grizzlies. Gustine defeated Waterford 25-23, 25-22 later in the week.

Local youngsters who took part in a youth cheer camp held by the Gustine High squad had the opportunity to showcase their skills Friday night. They joined the high school cheerleaders to perform for fans at the Reds’ football game.

Orestimba suffered its first loss of the young frosh-soph season at the hands of Hughson Friday, dropping a 14-0 decision in a defensive battle.


Top honors in the initial edition of the 2019 Mattos Newspapers Football Contest went to Chandra Garza, who correctly picked the outcome of 22 of the 25 games on the contest form.

Orestimba and Hughson have fostered a notable non-league rivalry in recent years following a series of hard-fought contests.
