NEWMAN — The Newman Garden Club opened its 78th year with a meeting at Perry’s Pizza, continuing a tradition that began in 1948 when the club was first formed as an offshoot of the Newman Women’s Club, according to club materials. The group has long provided speakers and programs aimed at supporting gardening knowledge and beautification in the community.
The club, which now includes members from Gustine, recently welcomed Valley Lode District Director Paula Elias, who spoke about her gardening experience and her role as a district officer.
Members are preparing for their major annual fundraiser, the Garden of Tables, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Al Goman Center. The event features up to 20 themed tables decorated by hostesses, with past themes ranging from Mediterranean tent designs to holiday and seasonal displays. Funds raised support organizations including TOSCA, GUSTO and Penny Pines. Those interested in attending may contact club president Pat Rocha at 209‑761‑6890.
