Boots & Skirts luncheon set for Oct. 10 in Stevinson

The Gustine Chamber of Commerce will host its “Boots & Skirts” ladies luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Grove Bar & Grill. The 21‑and‑over event will feature cowboy waiters and costs $65 per person.

Gustine Historical Society to host Oct. 14 salad bar luncheon

The Gustine Historical Society will hold its 26th annual Salad Bar Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Al Goman Center, according to event materials.

Tickets are $15 per person, with take‑out available upon request. For more information, attendees may call 209‑262‑0378.

The event supports the society’s mission of “Preserving Our History.”

Newman opens youth basketball signups through Oct. 9

Registration is underway for the City of Newman’s youth basketball league, with signups open through Oct. 9.

The program, offered in partnership with the Jr. Golden State Basketball League, is open to boys and girls who will be at least 8 years old by Dec. 4, 2026. Fourteen‑year‑olds may participate if they are in eighth grade. The registration fee is $75, with an additional $10 charge for non‑NCLUSD residents.

The season begins Jan. 16, and participants will receive a reversible jersey, certificate of participation and an official Jr. Golden headband. Space is limited to 50 children per division.

Newman Library announces early October programs

The Newman Library will host a series of children’s, teen and adult programs beginning Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Story Time for children under 5 is scheduled Oct. 7 from 10 to 10:30 a.m., followed by Wee Move & Play from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Both programs return Oct. 14 and Oct. 21, with Wee Move & Play also offered Oct. 28.

A Dungeons & Dragons session for teens ages 13 to 18 will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. A session for adults 18 and older is set for Saturday, Oct. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The library will host a Children’s Nintendo Switch Party on Monday, Oct. 12, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for ages 8 to 13, and a Teen Nintendo Switch Party on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for ages 13 to 18.

LEGO Play is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Children under 4 must have direct parental supervision.

A pumpkin‑decorating event will take place Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own pumpkins; a limited number of foam pumpkins will be available.

All programs take place at the Newman Library and are offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Gustine Library highlights mid‑October programs

The Gustine Library will offer a slate of mid‑October activities beginning Wednesday, Oct. 7, with Story Time from 10 to 10:30 a.m. for children ages 5 and under, followed by Wee Move & Play from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Teen programs continue Tuesday, Oct. 13, with book‑pumpkin making at 3 p.m. Teen Switch Game Time follows on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and Pokémon fidget clickers on Tuesday, Oct. 27, all at 3 p.m.

Children’s activities include Kids Chalk Day on Thursday, Oct. 15, and a “Design Your Own Scary Book Cover” session on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.

Tiny Tales Storytime for ages 3 to 5 will be held Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 17, 24 and 31, with Family Lego Fun Time at 1 p.m. on the same days.

A Student Success Card Kick‑Off event is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 29 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The library is also hosting a month‑long Halloween scavenger hunt, where visitors can search for hidden items and earn a prize.

Newman Historical Society continues monthly meetings

The Newman Historical Society is holding its regular monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 1 p.m. in the basement of the Newman Museum. Members and guests are welcome to attend.

Red Hatters of Orestimba welcoming new members

The Red Hatters of Orestimba are inviting new members to join their monthly gatherings, held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May.

Women under 50 may join as Pinkies, while those 50 and older are welcomed as Red Hatters.

Newman fall clean‑up events set for Oct. 12–17

The city’s annual fall clean‑up week will run Oct. 12–17, offering residents free disposal and recycling opportunities at designated locations.

General drop‑off will be available at 1420 M Street throughout the week, with extended hours on Wednesday. Tire Amnesty runs Oct. 14–17 at 712 Fresno Street, allowing up to nine tires per household, excluding rims and tractor tires.

Household hazardous waste will be accepted Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon, or until full, at the same Fresno Street site. E‑waste collection is scheduled for Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Shred‑it Day will take place Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon, both also at 712 Fresno Street.

The clean‑up events are free for Newman residents, who must bring a city utility bill and driver’s license. Commercial waste is not accepted.
