OHS announces adult evening lap swim schedule for week of Sept. 28

Orestimba High School will offer adult evening lap swim sessions this week, with times varying by day.

Lap swim will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $4 per session, or $3 for seniors 55 and older. All sessions are open to adults 18 and over.

Pool noodles, kickboards and water weights will be available, and the pool is heated to about 83 degrees. Sessions take place at OHS, 707 Hardin Road in Newman.

The schedule is subject to weather conditions. The pool will remain open in rain but will close if thunder or lightning occurs.

Newman opens youth basketball signups through Oct. 9

Registration is underway for the City of Newman’s youth basketball league, with signups open through Oct. 9.

The program, offered in partnership with the Jr. Golden State Basketball League, is open to boys and girls who will be at least 8 years old by Dec. 4, 2026. Fourteen‑year‑olds may participate if they are in eighth grade. The registration fee is $75, with an additional $10 charge for non‑NCLUSD residents.

The season begins Jan. 16, and participants will receive a reversible jersey, certificate of participation and an official Jr. Golden headband. Space is limited to 50 children per division.

Blue Star Memorial marker dedication set for Oct. 2 in Newman

The Newman-Gustine Garden Club and the Hills Ferry Cemetery District will host a dedication ceremony for a new Blue Star Memorial Marker at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Hills Ferry Cemetery, 1334 W. Stuhr Road.

The Blue Star Memorial Program honors U.S. service members — those who have served, are currently serving and will serve in the Armed Forces. The marker will be placed in a sculpted, curbed area at the cemetery landscaped with large rocks and crushed granite.

Native Sons announce Oct. 1 dinner meeting, dues update for members

The John C. Fremont Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West will hold its next dinner meeting on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Veterans Hall, with bingo to follow, according to the organization.

Members who wish to arrive early to play cards or visit may come at 5 p.m. Angela will prepare the dinner and is requesting an accurate head count. A note to members states that annual dues will increase to $80 next year due to a rise in the Grand Parlor per‑capita rate.
