Newman Crows-Landing Unified School District Superintendent Justin Pruett provided an update on ongoing districtwide projects and suggested a facility for the Orestimba High wrestling team during a Citizens Oversight Committee meeting at McConnell Center last Tuesday.
Throughout Tuesday’s meeting, Pruett talked about bond Measures P and X, updates on projects using Measures X, S, and T funding and what could happen within the district in the future.
The first topic discussed was the varsity baseball field receiving lighting upgrades. Pruett explained that the right field was previously owned by the city, delaying any changes at the time. NCLUSD Board of Trustees authorized the purchase of the city’s portion of the property on April 20 for $143,500. The agreement will also allow the district to build a parking lot in the unpaved area north of the field.
More than a month after the purchase, Pruett said it’s “going to take some time before it’s officially ours.”
A new workshop for Orestimba’s Career Technical Education program is another project that’s underway, Pruett said. The project will cost $6 million, with $3 million coming out of bond fundings and the other remaining balance will be through a state grant. Proposition 2, or Assembly 247, authorized $10 billion in bonds to fund construction and renovations to school facilities.
With more $6 million in unallocated funding, Pruett brought up the idea of building a facility for the OHS’ wrestling team. The team currently uses the cafeteria to practice, but it’s probably “not the best place,” Pruett said.
“We would like to have a wrestling facility for our wrestlers,” Pruett said. “[It’s] a pretty big program, and it really is making quite a comeback.”
Pruett said if the district wants to consider the idea, there has to be enough money to do so.
“When we work on these projects, there’ll be a new facilities workshop with the board, and then they will be given priorities,” Pruett said. “My hope is that we have a home for our wrestlers.”
