On a hot evening in Modesto, 43 of the best high school baseball players in Stanislaus County all came together for the 34th rendition of the Modesto Sunrise Rotary All-Star Game at Modern Woodmen Field on Saturday.

The more-than three hour nine inning contest ended with Team Gold winning 10-5 against Team Blue.

Saturday’s showcase was not only an opportunity for the county’s best to compete against each other, but for some players stepping on the diamond plate for the final time. One of them was Orestimba High graduate Jaden Sotelo.

At the team’s banquet last month, Warriors head coach Louie Dominguez announced in front of the players that Sotelo will be representing Orestimba in the exhibition.

The announcement was a dream come true for the recent graduate, who waited for the opportunity since his freshman year.

“It’s always a dream to play in a game like this where you’re selected out of your team [and] playing with the best of [the county],” Sotelo said.

As he prepared to suit up for the purple and gold a final time, Dominguez told him to give it his all as he “won’t not gonna get another chance like this,” Sotelo said.

As he approached home plate in top of the second inning, Sotelo showed his poise as he batted a single towards the right side of the field and slid to second base following a failed catch from an opposing first baseman.

Team Blue brought in three runs in the top of the third inning to lead 3-0. The lead expanded to five following a two-run fourth inning.

Just when everything was working well, the gold team responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game going into the fifth.

Team Gold went on to add five more runs in the next five innings to win 10-5.
