Orestimba girls’ soccer almost let a game slip away from them but ended up walking away with a win vs. SAL League opponent Delhi 3-2, on Tuesday night.
It was a nail-biter finish for the Warriors. With three minutes left in the game the Orestimba girls scored the final goal.
In the second half, the game seemed to be favored for the Warriors as their defense clamped the Hawks to a 1-2 score. The Hawks were persistent and didn’t let off their will and scored a goal, with under 10-minutes left in the second half. It tied the game, 2-2.
“You try to tell your girls to relax and not feel the pressure. But they’re human. They feel the pressure. I try to calm them down and just get it on frame,” said head coach Alex Avila.
Being persistent and trusting what they know best, would eventually win the game for the Warriors. With just under three minutes left in the game, the Warriors scored by working well and a bit of luck for goal. The Hawk’s goalkeeper miss stepped and let the ball slip over her shoulder into the net.
“She got it on frame and did get it a little lucky bounce. It works. We’ll take the win any way we can,” said Avila.
Warriors had a team effort in scoring. Madelynn Perez (2), Hailee Andrade (4), and Maya Barajas (9) all scored a goal apiece. On defense, is where Maria Avila (0) would show her greatest attributes with 15 saves on Tuesday. Overall, the Warriors stayed persistent, held their ground on defense and attacked for any opportunity to score.
Playoffs are nearing quickly. The Warriors still hold first in the SAL league, with their rival Ripon Christian trailing behind them in second place. The Warriors have only a SAL league matchup game this week against Le Grand at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
