The Orestimba Warriors emerged triumphant and secured the SAL league championship in spectacular fashion by defeating the Gustine Reds in a rivalry rematch that would end in an 83-28 score Friday night.
The Warriors came into the game more prepared than before and were playing like the league championship team they have built. They ended their regular season 25-2, 12-0 in the SAL league.
“We had a goal before the season and it was to win league, which we took care of. It was also win some early season tournaments, which we won the two we were in. And then the last one was make a run in the playoffs. We’ve already accomplished a lot,” said head coach Charlie Kothenbeutel
The game slipped away from the Reds early on. The first half closed with a score of 47-13, accompanied by a flurry of dunks and fast breaks that became a problem for the Reds. As the half closed, the Reds came out with a different tactic that allowed them to score points, but nothing to match the 26-points in the third period by the Warriors.
“I’m just happy it’s there. As far as like records show, you know. Best regular season record in school history. 25-games won on a 20-game win streak. All 20-games are by double figures, ten points or more. And just to see these kids from where they came from, now senior group, when they were freshmen was COVID,” said Kothenbeutel.
Offensively, Angel Reynoso (10) would score a total of 15-points for the Warriors. Reynoso (10) is a threat to any defense because of his swift ability to make crucial post shots and maneuver through defensive schemes, and most importantly, dunk the ball. Speaking of dunking, 6-foot-1 Devon Bell (0) would reach high in the second half, sending the crowd cheering with amazement with a dunk that left the backboard ringing.
This week, the Warriors will travel to Sacramento to play West Campus High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Warriors are a one-game-at-a-time team and their focus is to win that first round of playoffs.
