Orestimba High School boys basketball team remains undefeated in league, after a dominant 74-30 victory over rival Gustine High on Friday. The high-powered Warriors basketball team has played with confidence that has contributed to their 19-2 overall season, securing 1st in the SAL league and 6-0 record.
Despite the lopsided score, Orestimba’s Head Coach Charlie Kothenbeutel acknowledged that his team had faced some challenges in their recent performances.
“We had not been playing the last couple of games, not necessarily up to our best effort,” Kothenbeutel admitted. “Just not as crisp as we want to be, even though we’re still
getting wins.”
The game against Gustine proved to be a turning point for the Warriors. Kothenbeutel expressed his satisfaction with the effort displayed by his players. Angel Reynoso (10) led the team in scoring for the night with 11 points. Blake Melo (3) also became a problem for the Reds racking a total of 10 points and two 3-point shots made.
“I was pleased to see the effort that we were able to bring in. I wasn’t sure exactly what level we’d be playing at,” commented Kothenbeutel.
While Orestimba showcased their dominance, Coach Kothenbeutel took a moment to acknowledge Gustine’s ongoing development. Gustine Reds are still going through many changes as a developing team. The Warriors have close to half a generation of players who have long-established chemistry.
“Gustine, they’re developing right now,” Kothenbeutel remarked. “The team is working hard, growing a lot throughout the season. It was nice to get a chance to go out there against them. And regardless of the score, I love the rivalry.”
The sentiment of sportsmanship is there. The Warriors and Reds have respect for each other, emphasizing local rivals. Despite the clear victory for the Warriors, Gustine’s determination and growth throughout the season hinted at a promising future.
This week, Warriors are set vs. Denair and Waterford High. The Warriors Travel to Denair at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Then, then the Warriors will make another stop to Waterford High at 7 p.m. on Friday.
