Gustine and Newman police issued a handful of citations over the holiday weekend as both cities ramped up enforcement on illegal fireworks for Independence Day.
Gustine police issued one citation during their maximum‑enforcement period, which included marked and unmarked patrols, plainclothes officers and all reserve personnel on duty. Police Chief Ruben Chavez said the city maintains a strict zero‑tolerance policy, with fines starting at $2,000.
Newman police issued two citations and seized approximately 10 pounds of illegal fireworks, according to Lt. Ashley Williams. The city also increased staffing and deployed additional patrols, along with cameras positioned throughout town to identify violators. Newman’s minimum fine for illegal fireworks is $1,000, with higher penalties for repeat offenses or violations under the California Fire Code.
Officials in both cities said the heightened enforcement aims to reduce fires, injuries and property damage, which historically rise during the July 4 period.
