GUSTINE — Gustine High School seniors Joao Palomino and Gwendolyn Barcelos have been named the 2025–26 Southern League Scholar‑Athletes, an honor recognizing students who excel in both academics and athletics — and who manage the demanding balance between the two.

Unlike awards that focus solely on grades or athletic performance, the Scholar‑Athlete Award highlights students who maintain high achievement in the classroom while competing at a high level in sports. It’s a distinction that requires discipline, time management and the ability to perform under pressure.

For Palomino, a three‑sport standout, the recognition brought a moment of reflection.

“I’m very blessed for it. I can’t believe that I was going to get it,” he said. “It’s a cool feeling seeing that my academics and my athleticism would give me an award like that. I’m very thankful.”

Palomino competed in football, basketball and baseball during his senior year, all while keeping up with Honor Roll expectations. He described the student‑athlete lifestyle as a grind — especially on nights when late games collided with looming deadlines.

“Sometimes it’s a grind when you have an assignment due at 11:59 p.m. and you just had a game that ran late,” he said. “At football, when it was 7 p.m. games that go past 10:30 or 11, you just have to go home and make sure you have your responsibilities straight. At the end of the day, I’m a student‑athlete.”

Barcelos, who also competed in three sports this year, joins Palomino as the league’s top female scholar‑athlete. For her, the award represents the shared commitment of students who push themselves on the field, court and in the classroom.

“It felt good to get recognized and see all the other students that put in the same hard work and effort in the classroom and on the field and the court like I do,” Barcelos said. “It felt good to get noticed for all of the hard work that we put in.”

She added that being a leader at a small school often means taking on multiple roles — in sports, clubs and campus events — making the recognition especially meaningful.

“It’s such a small school, so it felt really good to be recognized,” she said.

The Southern League Scholar‑Athlete Award underscores the academic side of high school athletics, celebrating students who maintain honor‑level coursework while navigating the physical and mental demands of multi‑sport schedules. Palomino and Barcelos’ achievements set a high standard for future Gustine athletes.

Their success serves as a reminder that while final scores matter, the discipline built off the field is what truly defines a champion.
