NEWMAN - On Friday, the action begins for the Orestimba and Gustine football teams.
Warrior Stadium will be the site of the annual Westside Classic. According to Orestimba head coach Austin Martins, 10 high school football programs will compete at the stadium.
Those schools are host Orestimba, plus West of Tracy, Sierra of Manteca, Mountain House, Lathrop, Modesto High, Pacheco of Los Banos, Atwater, Ceres and Central Valley of Ceres.
Four of the schools are from the Western Athletic Conference; Lathrop, Pacheco, Ceres and Central Valley.
“We have a lot of WAC schools,” Martins said.
The plan, Martins said, is that those schools would not face each other in the scrimmage.
“We prioritize the league… not playing opponents,” said Martins, who is referring to the WAC schools at the scrimmage of not facing each other on Friday.
Two of the schools that are playing each other in the scrimmage and in a non-league game are Modesto and Central Valley. They are scheduled to play on Sept. 17.
The freshmen football scrimmages are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. The junior varsity will go at 4:40 and the varsity squads at 7.
Two teams will scrimmage on the East side of the field, while two more will be on the West side.
The varsity scrimmages are scheduled to run just after 10 p.m.
Gustine
The Reds will also be hosting a scrimmage on Friday at the Gustine High School Football Stadium.
According to Gustine head coach Collin Lane, his team will scrimmage against Southern Athletic League foes Delhi, Mariposa and Stone Ridge Christian High.
Other schools that are scheduled to be there are Big Valley Christian High of Modesto, Golden Sierra of Garden Valley, Woodland Christian and Bret Harte.
The scrimmages are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
