Orestimba High’s Brett Gray delivered the strongest meet of his prep career Saturday, turning a No. 12 long‑jump ranking into a second‑place finish and adding another runner‑up mark in the triple jump at the Golden West Invitational, one of the nation’s longest‑running and most prestigious postseason prep meets.
Gray, an incoming junior who competes unattached because he is not part of a club program, soared to a personal‑best 20 feet, 9½ inches in the long jump. He entered the meet seeded 12th but surged up the standings with the best series of jumps he has posted this year.
In the triple jump, Gray came in ranked fifth and again outperformed expectations, placing second with a leap of 42‑8.
The Golden West Invitational, founded in 1960 and held in Sacramento since 1965, has a long history of showcasing the nation’s top high school athletes. More than 200 former participants have gone on to compete in the Olympic Games, and dozens of national and state records have been set at the meet. In recent years, the event has expanded to include youth, open and masters divisions, offering athletes of all ages a high‑level competitive environment.
Gray’s appearance at the meet is part of a busy postseason schedule that includes both USATF and AAU events. He will compete in upcoming national‑qualifying meets with hopes of advancing to the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in Iowa and the AAU Junior Olympics in Los Angeles.
Gray continues to train with a jumping coach along with a speed and agility coach. After the summer season, he plans to compete in indoor meets in the fall as preparation for the 2027 spring track campaign.
