The Gustine Reds softball began their season on Friday, when the Reds took on the Pacheco Panthers, falling to them 4-8. The Pacheco Panthers held a steady lead till the 5th inning, while the Gustine Reds attempted a comeback. But their first loss of the season has an upside.
“Girls made some good defensive plays,” mentioned head coach Yolanda Gallichio. “Our hits even came around, but I know we came up short. I’m very proud of them.”
Gallichio is honored of her team’s first performance. An overarching theme that is sure to carry over into the rest of the season. Overall, a first game to build on. Multiple players had runs including Caitlyn Gallichio (5), Alexis Gallichio (1), Christina Navarro (11), and Shandel Aguilera (9). But their four runs weren’t enough to outlast the Pacheco Panthers 8 to win the game.
The 2022-2023 season left satisfactory results with room for growth. The Reds ended with a 6-19 overall, 5-9 in the Southern Athletic League and ranking 5th. This season the Reds are beginning with a loss, but a rebuild, season-to-season is part of it. Every high school team faces the challenge of revolving players. But coach Gallichio has goals set for this season.
“I would like to see the team improve more and work on their skills. That’s when we will achieve a winning season. I know these girls have it in them,” said Gallichio.
Coach Gallichio has confidence in her team. Building on their last season downfalls, refining skills, and advancing towards a successful team. This season should attest a stronger team that can compete in a higher ranking in the SAL league.
This week, the Reds will play Weston Ranch at 3:30 p.m., at Weston Ranch, on Monday. Then the Reds will participate in a non-league away tournament beginning at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. The team will launch the tournament by playing the Chavez Titans (Stockton).
