With the regular season coming to an end, the Orestimba High baseball were swept in its series against Escalon High following a 10-6 loss in the final game on the road on Thursday.

The Warriors concluded its season with 13 consecutive losses, which resulted in the team finishing 8-17 overall and 2-10 in Trans-Valley League. It was a tale of two halves for a program that started the season at 8-4 overall following its first and only TVL series win against Sonora High.

While it’s the result that they didn’t want, five senior players stepped onto the field on the final time as graduation approached. For some players, it was an emotional afternoon as some teammates had a bonding with one another since playing pee wee baseball.

“It’s a really close route. They really love each other,” said Orestimba head coach Louie Dominguez.

While it was the final game for the Warriors, the Cougars had their sights for the postseason. Three players recorded two RBIs each for Escalon and were led by junior Brody Abbot, who also recorded two runs.

At the top of the first inning, the Warriors played how it began the season with hitting the ball down the field and bringing in runners to lead 4-0. However, the Cougars wasted no time with four runs of their own to tie it all up at the bottom of the inning.

Just as Escalon climbed back from its deficit, Orestimba had no response as the team went scoreless while allowing six runs in the following four innings to trail 10-4. Despite bringing in two runners in the sixth and seventh inning, it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback as the Warriors lost its final game of the season by four runs.

With his first season at the helm coming to an end, Dominguez said he was surprised at how fast the average pitch is in the TVL with what he believes to be 80 mph.

“We really got to focus on throwing strikes next year,” he said. “We definitely got a lot of work to do this off season to catch up to them.”
