The Orestimba High tennis team’s breakout season isn’t slowing anytime soon after The No.8 Warriors swept No.9 Delhi High, 9-0, in the first round of Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Coed Tennis playoffs on Friday.
Orestimba will travel to Sacramento to face its biggest test yet against No.1 West Campus High in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The first set begins at 4:00 p.m.
In just his second season at the helm, head coach Nolan Osborn had continued to elevate the program. With how last season ended with the team losing its final matches, he knew there was no room for error this season.
“Last year, [we were] right there, [and] lost a couple of matches at the end,” Osborn said. “It’s a privilege to be there, but to get that first one, very thankful for that.”
While Delhi were swept in the boys singles, the two matches were anything but one-sided as both went into a third set. After winning the opening set, Colton Reeves fell, 2-6, in the second set against Jose Garcia. The final set later went into a tiebreaker match where Reeves won 10-7.
Facing elimination against Emanuel Vivas, Warren Varner forced a decisive third set after a 6-1 win in the second. Like Reeves, his match also went to a tiebreaker where he prevailed 10-5.
Mirella Fregoso continued her dominance in the girl singles as she not only won her matchup against Delhi’s Marlen Diaz, but held Diaz scoreless through two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Following her, teammate Ashlynn Bell had no trouble against Liz Contreras, 6-1, 6-2.
While Warriors continued its dominance in doubles, one particular match was the closest in the afternoon. After winning the opening set, Orestimba’s duo of Aaaron Gallardo and Kevin Rodriguez fell 4-6 in the set, setting up a decisive final set. Gallardo and Kevin Rodriguez won the match after they prevailed with a 14-12 win.
Following them was Nabeel Ali and Jose Rodriguez, who later won their boys doubles match in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Warriors’ momentum carried into the final three matches. Mallory Solano and Sofiah Ramirez won 6-0, 6-1,in their girls doubles match. Later on, Abby Layne and Samantha Aguilar won their match in two sets, 6-1, 7-5.
