In just his second season at the helm, Orestimba High tennis head coach Nolan Osborn has achieved accomplishments that seemed improbable last year.
After a 9-5 campaign, the Warriors clinched a postseason spot after finishing within the top three in the Trans-Valley League standings. It didn’t stop there as the team swept Delhi High 9-0 to advance to quarterfinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Coed Tennis playoffs.
Now, the second-year head coach can add winners of the TVL girls doubles tournament to his list.
After losing the opening set, the duo of seniors Mirella Fregoso and Mirah Ramirez bounced back in the second, 7-6, setting up a final set to decide a winner. With a 5-4 lead, the duo was closer than ever to making history.
With the ball approaching her, Fregoso swung her racket towards it as it pivoted to the left side of the court. As Ripon High’s Alyssa Lan failed to stop the ball, Fregoso exclaimed in excitement and immediately hugged her teammate as they now sit as the TVL’s best.
On Saturday, the Warriors took home two plaques after competing in the TVL Tournament at Modesto Junior College.
With how last season ended, Osborn said Saturday’s match was a testament to the players’ training during the offseason. He added that they were “a very motivated group.”
“They came up short, not for team playoffs, but also individual sections last year as well,” Osborn said.
Saturday’s win was not only an accomplishment, but a final bow for Ramirez and Fregoso. With the graduation approaching, the senior duo, who have been on the team since their freshman year, leave their mark on the program.
“We’ve been trying to make the best of our last season,” Ramirez said. “It’s good making [the] playoffs too, as a team.”
While she finished as the TVL’s best in girls singles, Fregoso admitted that the transition to doubles was “harder” than what she’s accustomed to.
“You have a partner now. You have to communicate, things like that,” she said. “I’ve played with Sophia [Ramirez] before, and we know how to work together.”
While the team didn’t win any of the other group tournaments, Orestimba advanced to the semifinals in three out of the four tournaments.
In the girls singles, Ashlynn Bell won in the first two rounds, but fell to Ripon’s Brookelyn Betschart in two sets, 3-6, 2-6. Later in the mixed doubles, Colton Reeves and Bell were outplayed by Escalon High’s Nathan Rose and Emma Rangel in two sets in the semifinals. Rose and Rangel went on to win the mixed doubles tournament.
One day after he won a three-set match against Delhi High, Aaron Gallardo alongside his teammate, Jose Rodriguez, fell to Hughson High’s Aiden Ramos and Hayden Rytting in the semifinals.
After winning in the first round against Sonora High’s Joel Taylor, Reeves advanced to the quarterfinals where he lost to River Islands High’s Sai Nagavarapu in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
“[I’m] just proud of all my players, every single player on the team,” Osborn said.
