With league championships underway, Orestimba High track and field took home one top-placement finish and seven top-five finishes during the Trans-Valley League Freshman and Sophomore Championships on Friday at Escalon High School.

Sophomore Israel Ramirez won the boys 110-meter race after he clocked in a time of 14.66 seconds. He now holds the program’s fastest time in the underclassmen event, surpassing Peter Junkin’s time of 18.28 in 2012.

Ramirez’s feat comes to no surprise for head coach Charlie Kothenbeutel. He said it was great to see the sophomore runner “coming into form.”

“For him to be able to go out there to have a great tune up meet … it was nice to see,” Kothenbeutel said.

With the team not having more than one top-placement finish, he added that this would be the last meet of the season for the underclassmen athletes.

“For them to be able to go out there in their last one and succeed in the way they did, it was very nice to see,” Kothenbeutel said.

In the girls 1600-meter run, freshman Cade Carmona ran 05:42.39 for a second-place finish. Her time is the program's fourth-fastest in the event.

Sophomore Madalynn Hernandez and Carmona finished third and fifth, respectively, in the girls 800-meter dash. Hernandez now holds the fifth-fastest time in the event for the program at 2:36.00.

In the boys 1600-meter dash, freshman Benjamin Cerna and sophomore Emmanuel Garabito finished in third and fifth place, respectively. Cerna’s time of 4:46.35 is now the program’s fifth-fastest time in the event.

Orestimba recorded a time of 4:42.00 in the girls 4x400 relay for a third-place finish.

Garbito finished in fourth place in the boys 3200-meter race after he ran a time of 10:55.56. Freshman Johnny Samson threw a personal-best throw of 103 feet, 6 ½ inches for a fourth-place finish in the boys discus throw.

Lastly, Ramirez finished in fifth-place in the boys 400-meters run after he recorded a time of 55.78 seconds.

Orestimba will be at Ripon High School for the TVL Varsity Championships on Thursday, with the first event starting at 3 p.m. Ramirez will participate in the meet, Kothenbeutel said.
