Following a loss to Hilmar High earlier in the week, the Orestimba High flag football team bounced back with a 25-12 road win against Hughson High last Thursday.
The Warriors improved to 17-2 overall and 5-1 in Trans-Valley League play, while the Huskies fell to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Orestimba quarterback Salece Machado threw 24 for 35 for 234 yards with four touchdowns and one interceptions. She has now thrown for 38 TDs total so far this season.
Three different Warriors players caught a touchdown pass, with receiver Natalie Corella catching two TDs with 83 receiving yards. Receivers Ellery Gustafson and Jojo Perez each recorded a receiving touchdown.
After Perez intercepted a pass in the game’s opening drive, the Warriors got on the board following a four-play drive that ended with Machado throwing a TD pass to Gustafson, 6-0.
Hughson began the ensuing drive with Kindal Barstow throwing a 34-yard pass to Ruby Ramont. Barstow continued her momentum immediately with a 30-yard pass to Ashlynn Merritt for a first down at Orestimba’s goal line. On third-and-goal, Barstow threw a TD pass to Keylee Lundquist, who was left open at the upper-left corner of the end zone to tie the game at 6-6.
In the Warriors’ ensuing drive, Violet Blake intercepted Machado’s pass for a pick six for a 12-6 lead going into the second quarter.
However, after both teams failed to score on the first drive of the period, the Warriors still had plenty of time to tie the game. Machado led her team to the Huskies’ goal line with three minutes remaining in the half. She tied the game at 12 following a TD pass to Corella.
After Hughson failed to convert on fourth down at Orestimba’s goal line, the Warriors had less than two minutes to go down the field and take the lead before halftime.
Eventually, Machado led Orestimba within the Huskies’ 22-yard line with 11 seconds left. With enough time in the pocket, she threw a 22-yard TD pass to Perez for a 18-12 lead going into the second half.
While both teams failed to score in the third quarter, the Warriors were at Hughson’s goal line to begin the final period. On third-and-goal, Machado scrambled to the right and threw another TD pass to Corella at the upper-right corner of the end zone. Following the extra-point completion, Orestimba led 25-12.
The Warriors will host Ripon High (12-9, 2-4 TVL) on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
