The Orestimba High swim team concluded its first season back with the Last Chance meet on Friday.
Five teams participated in Friday’s meet, including the Warriors’ Trans-Valley League rival, Hilmar High. The Yellowjackets won the meet overwhelmingly with 263 points, 206 points ahead of second-place Fowler High.
Considering that swimming is practically a new sport at the school, head coach John Labno praised the student-athletes, many of whom have swam for the first time, for improving their individuals throughout the season.
“I was really happy that we ended up with 16 [swimmers],” Labno said. “I thought, ‘Okay, we’re gonna end up with two or three kids that are gonna want to do it.’”
The Warriors recorded eight top-seven finishes during Friday’s meet. Myles Costa clocked in a time of 1 minute, 49.77 seconds for third-place in the men’s 100-meter butterfly event.
In the women’s 400-meter relay, Orestimba placed third with a time of 5:59.28. Senior Beatrice placed fifth after she clocked in at 3:19.82 in the women’s 200-freestyle event. In the women’s 200-meter medley, the Warriors swam a time of 2:50.52 to place sixth.
Kyleigh Brace finished in sixth place after she clocked in at 3:34.47 in the women’s individual medley event. Later in the women’s 100-meter backstrokes event, junior Lindsey Flanery and Tianna Flores placed seventh and eight, respectively.
The Warriors placed seventh after clocking at 2:32.00 in the women’s 200-meter freestyle relay.
While there’s no confirmation on whether another season will happen, Labno said he’s confident that there will be enough students interested in participating. He added that the program will be advertised to Yolo Middle School eight graders.
“I’m hoping that all the kids who are underclassmen this year will want to come back next year,” Labno said.
