After winning its first two matches of the postseason, the Orestimba High tennis team’s landmark season came to an end.
The Warriors lost 5-4 against Riverbank High in the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Coed Tennis playoffs last Thursday.
Going into his second season, head coach Nolan Osborn had only one goal: Make the postseason. However, what his team did far exceeded his expectations.
Not only did the Warriors make the postseason, but they won their first two rounds, including a 5-4 quarterfinals win on the road against top-seeded West Campus High (Sacramento). The accomplishments didn’t stop there as seniors Marisa Fregoso and Sofiah Ramirez won the Trans-Valley League girls doubles tournament.
After barely missing the postseason last year, the players came into this season with something to prove. With their commitment to success, Osborn said his players were “grinders,” alluding to their offseason training.
“They put in the work. I mean, these past two years, they’ve been at it,” Osborn said about his players. “I know [in] their free time, even during the summer, they would just go out with each other and [compete with] a lot of the players in our league.”
In Thursday’s semifinals, the Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead after sweeping Orestimba in the boys singles. The Warriors later tied the match thanks to Ashlynn Bell and Fregoso winning their respective matchup in the girls singles.
After Orestimba lost the first boys singles match, Jose Rodriguez and Nabeel Ali won their doubles matchup tie it at 3.
Mallory Solano and Ramirez later gave their team a 4-3 lead as the Warriors were one match away from advancing to the championship game. However, Riverbank responded back with wins in the second girls doubles and mixed doubles matches, effectively ending the Warriors’ season.
As he looks back at Orestimba’s 2026 campaign, Osborn said the season has been an "excellent ride” and is proud of all the players on the team.
“Despite not making the section finals and winning that section title, [I’m] really proud of them .. just thankful to be their head coach,” he said.
