Rainy weather didn’t stop the Orestimba boys soccer team from pulling off a decisive, 4-2, win against SAL rival Gustine on Friday. The win put the Warriors at 11-8-4 for the season, and 5-1-3 in league, good enough for a third place ranking.
“We were controlling most of it,” said Warriors head coach Jose Serrato. ”We were 0-0 for a while, that was when they were playing a little better than us; we were not combining the touches that we wanted at first, but then towards the end we started to combine the touches with the midfield.”
Orestimba, now with their 3rd win this season against the Reds, hold true to their local dominance. Downpouring rain lasted the entire game, but that didn’t slow down the Warriors in the first half. Points from the team had a fair share from Alfredo Figueroa (10), Bryan Carmona (7), Christian Garcia (3), and Hector Madrigal (15). All accounting for a goal each.
“It’s always a tough game because it’s a rivalry game, but we know we could beat them since we already played them. We know how they play. They played a little better this time compared to the last time,” said Serrato.
Without a doubt, the Warriors were able to dominate the first half with 3 total goals, before finishing the game with 1 during the second half. The Reds couldn’t answer quick enough and eventually scored within the last 10 minutes of the game.
“I’m just going to continue to put in the work and continue to compete and then start developing next year’s team,” commented Reds head coach Lino Maldonado.
The Reds are looking past the local rivalry loss, although it’s going to sting, as they now focus on the next season and finishing the current one.
This week, the Warriors are hosting Denair Coyotes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, then they travel to Waterford High at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Reds hosted Le Grand on Monday and will travel to Mariposa County on Friday.
