Orestimba Warriors girls’ basketball has proven their true-powerhouse abilities this season. The team is on a 12-game win streak after defeating both SAL league opponents Delhi Hawks 57-2 and Mariposa County, 35-24. Ranking the team 1st, with a record of 10-0 in the SAL league and an overall of 17-8.
Coach Scott Felber focuses on one game at a time. A 12-game win streak is not an easy feat to achieve. The motto this season has been to take each opponent at the time and not get too ahead of themselves. And their records have shown just that.
“We just really focus on the next game. When you lose a game, you don’t dwell on it. When you win a game, you don’t dwell on it. You just kind of learn from one game and go to the next one. Our focus is just on the Le Grand right now,” said Felber.
Their recent win against the Hawks was a one-sided game. Delhi has been struggling this season and their numbers show. The Hawks have a 0-14 overall record, 0-10 record in the SAL league, and rank in last place.
The Warriors’ most challenging opponent recently was Mariposa County, who is in second place in the SAL league and is their most fierce opponent. The Warriors eventually earned a 35-24 win at Mariposa High.
“We want to make sure that we’re getting better each game so that hopefully we can be peaking in the playoffs here,” said Felber.
The lead scorers vs. Mariposa County were Jenessa Gonzalez (5), scoring 10-points for the night. Mia Quevedo (11), would score 9-points total. Defensively, Kelsey Maninha (20), became a problem for the Grizzlies totaling 7 blocks for the Warriors. Overall defensive performance that wins games.
There is an important game arriving as the Warriors end their regular season. Two SAL league opponents remain. The Warriors will travel to Le Grand at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Gustine High School will travel to Orestimba at 7 p.m. on Thursday for a local rivalry rematch.
